Women’s Self-Defense Workshop 2024 – Empowering Women Through Aikido

On 19th October 2024, Aikido Shudokan Hong Kong held an amazing event – the Women’s Self-Defense Workshop, led by the highly skilled Elfira Ruizna Ortega Sensei (2nd Dan in Shudokan Aikido). This workshop was a safe place for women to learn, grow, and connect while discovering practical self-defense techniques rooted in the principles of Aikido.

Aikido: Building Awareness and Confidence

The workshop focused on empowering women by equipping them with essential skills to stay safe and confident in their daily lives. Participants learned:

  • Effective strategies to avoid violence by improving situational awareness and decision-making.

  • Simple yet powerful self-defense techniques to handle dangerous situations with confidence.

  • The art of safe falling (ukemi): A fundamental aspect of Aikido that helps minimize injuries and builds trust in one’s body.

Elfira Sensei’s teaching emphasized harmony and discipline, creating an environment where participants felt supported and encouraged to recognize their strength.

Moments of Connection on the Mats

While the focus remained on building strength and skills, the workshop fostered a sense of connection and camaraderie. As participants practiced techniques, there was a shared determination to improve and support one another. The occasional lighthearted moments—such as when someone mastered a move for the first time or worked through a challenging technique—brought smiles and strengthened the bonds among the group.

These shared experiences created a community of encouragement, where women felt empowered not just individually but collectively.

Heartfelt Gratitude

We extend our deepest gratitude to Elfira Ruizna Ortega Sensei for her dedication, expertise, and passion for empowering women through Aikido. Her compassionate teaching style inspired every participant to believe in their own potential.

A special thank you to all the women who joined us. Your courage, participation, and positive feedback mean everything to us and drive our commitment to organizing more Women’s Self-Defense Workshops in the future to support women and ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong.

Looking Ahead

This workshop was more than just a class—it was a step toward building a stronger, safer, and more confident community of women. We look forward to hosting more events that empower women and inspire them to embrace their inner strength.
